Full Circle
Art Africa 2017
Full Circle Art Africa 2017 is a programme in its first iteration under the World Cultures Festival. It aims to weave a tapestry of intercultural, cross-continental dialogue starting in Hong Kong, and rippling outward towards new Afro-Asian connections.
Guided by Leap Initiative Philanthropies’ mission to preserve & promote African arts and cultures within and outside Africa, Full Circle Art Africa 2017 hosts twenty-four artists from fourteen African countries to share contemporary art, performance, fashion, retail and inevitable cultural exchange.
The biennale is a first for Hong Kong in more ways than one:
The programme hosts the artists as well as their work, granting them the power to curate their space and engagement with the city. To have the artists present alongside their work is to recontextualize the art in its fuller context – something that African art has, historically, rarely been afforded.
In addition to exhibitions of contemporary African art and retail, the Full Circle programme includes workshops and dialogues with artists, as well as public space interventions such as street art and outdoor performances. This takes the art show beyond the confines of the white cube gallery and into the everyday fabric of Hong Kong.
Full Circle Art Africa: A Curatorial Platform for Cross-Cultural Resonance
Full Circle Art Africa represents a critical moment for the the public to experience a richer tapestry of African cultures, and to share in the discovery of unexpected connections between ancient African and Asian aesthetics.
At the heart of Full Circle Art Africa are the artists — emerging and established voices crafting new forms of resonance across continents.
→ [Meet the Artists]
The participating artists each carry a rich intercultural identity of their own, with one major commonality: their stories and practices are nested in Africa with a wingspan that crosses continents, cultures and global themes.
Afrocentric Voices, Global Alliances
With a focus on artists and makers crafting cross-continental connections from an Afrocentric foundation, Full Circle Art Africa is made possible by Leap Initiative Philanthropies and partners such as True Africa, Ovolo Hotels, TEDx Wan Chai 2017 and the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
